YEAR 1991/1992

In line with Rotary extension program, the idea of establishing a new Rotary Club in Westlands - Nairobi, a fast growing business suburb of Nairobi was mooted in the Rotary year 1988/ 89 when Past District Governor Rtn. Abdul Lakha was the Governor of District 9200. District Governor Yusuf Kodwavwala (1989/90) took the matter further and asked Past Chairman (President) Rtn. Nalin Shretta of Rotary Club of Hurlingham to be his special representative. Two years later in 1990/91 Rotary Club of Hurlingham sponsored the new club in Westlands. Rtn. Nalin Shretta with Rotary experience to his credit also a past Chairman of two Rotary clubs namely Utumishi and Hurlingham, was appointed by Sir Kailash Ramdance the then Governor of District 92005 from Mauritius as his special representative to form the Provincial Rotary Club of Westlands holding its weekly meetings at Jacaranda Hotel - Westlands. On 9th April 1991, the Club was officially admitted into Rotary International with an impressive charter membership of 51, a record in Kenya and the District. On 17th May 1991, at a colorful ceremony marking its Charter Night which was held at the Nairobi Hilton, D.G Kailash officially presented the charter to Chairman Nalin Shretta. Also to witness the ceremony were Honorable Minister of Environment and Natural Resources Dr. Mungai and some 300 guests. In keeping with the then R.I theme "Preserve Planet Earth” the club embarked on its first project by planting 150 trees in the urban area of Kangemi, where the area Member of Parliament and Honorable Minster Dr. Mungai and District Governor Kailash were present. Later His Excellency President Daniel Arap Moi planted a tree on the same site and congratulated Chairman Nalin and Rotary Club of Westlands - Nairobi for initiating the “Tree Planting Project.”
